Although Dr. Robert C. Atkins is perceived mostly as the author of “Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution”, followed by “Atkins for Life” which excited millions of people, he was, in fact, the founder of The Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine.

Born on October 17th in Columbus, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1951, and specialized in cardiology.

Dr. Atkins was the leader of the complementary medical techniques trend. He pleaded for taking into account natural healing arts instead of surgery and pharmaceutical drugs.

He was also extremely preoccupied with the prevention of obesity, heart disease and diabetes, by means of a proper diet and a nutrition plan, in an era when these disorders had made outrages. He offered his pacients both paths: conventional and complementary, just to recover them from those severe diseases.

A part of complementary techniques credibility is due to the efforts Dr. Atkins made in the last 40 years.

The social impact of the original “Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution”, published in 1972, was devastating. A lot of Americans were impressed by the Atkins nutritional diet approach and declared themselves supporters.
The 1992 and 1999 editions of “Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution” are among the top 50 best-selling books of all time.

Another edition of “Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution” followed in 2002, updated and including new chapters regarding not only medical research supporting the low-carb theory, but also practical advice and recipes.

His research did not restrict to diets only, but also embraced related issues:

  • recipes: “Dr. Atkins's New & Easy Diet Cookbook”
  • vita-nutrients: “Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drug”
  • aging: “Dr. Atkins Age-Defying revolution”

In 1989, Dr. Atkins established Complementary Formulations, Inc (later, Atkins Nutritionals) dedicated to Atkins dieters, who were in great demand of supplements, food and information products

Atkins Nutritionals is a market-leading provider of supplements. It also provides medical research on carbohydrate foods.

Atkins online was launched in 1996.

In 1999, he founded “Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation” designed for setting and proving the relationship between a low-carbohydrate diet and curing and preventing several severe diseases.
He also hosted the first radio show, “Design for living” and received a lot of recognition from international medical communities. Moreover, Dr. Atkins was chosen as one of the “People Who Mattered 2002” in Time magazine.
He died in 2003 from severe head trauma suffered in an accident.
