Atkins diet alcohol - UCD brewer: Beer can be healthy

Putting up a fight for beer-lovers everywhere, a UC Davis brewer says that although some diet promoters assert that beer is full of fattening carbohydrates, it can in fact be part of a healthy, “low-carb” lifestyle when used in moderation.
The claim that beer varieties are high in carbohydrates is erroneous, according to Charles Bamforth, director of the UC Davis brewery science program in the food science and technology department. “It’s unfortunate that this is an issue, because all beer is low-carb,” he said.
Beer varieties can contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and be a good source of soluble fiber in addition to their low carbohydrate quality, Bamforth said.
