Why Protein?
Dr Atkins belief that human metabolism could be modified by diet is the key to his weight loss plan. Carbohydrate consumption raises blood sugar. To maintain blood balance, the body produces insulin and this increase in insulin causes energy to be stored as fat. To counter fat storage, Atkins’ diet plan strictly limits carbohydrates and encourages protein consumption. This lack of glycogenof forces the body to use its other main energy source, fat, for fuel. As fat is utilized, ketones are formed which results in appetite suppression. As more calories are used when fat is the fuel source rather than carbohydrate, weight loss is faster.
